Hungarian finite verbs can cross-reference their direct object's number in addition to the subject's person and number. In the literature on this phenomenon, it is sometimes proposed that some of the verbal object markers are clitics and some are agreement markers. In this talk, I will argue that all verbal object markers are in fact agreement markers. I will base this argument on morphological, semantic, and syntactic arguments from older and more recent literature and show that Hungarian object agreement markers behave differently with respect to these diagnostics than clitics in Bulgarian or Amharic, among others.
