Student representatives
Dear students of linguistics!
We have been your student representatives since July 2023: Lea-Sophie Kravanja, Lucia Neuhold, Nina Richter (from left to right in the photo). As part of the ÖH, we represent your interests vis-à-vis the university, participate in the Curricula Commission in the creation of study and curricula and provide you with advice and support during your studies. In addition, we organize various events and get-togethers (e.g. the LinguLunch) to promote exchange between students and create a welcoming, collegial atmosphere at our institute.
Do you have questions about the study program, course or exam registrations, legal matters or need other tips and information?
We are here to advise you!
Write us an email, on Instagram or simply talk to us. We are also happy to arrange personal consultation hours if required.
You can also visit our website, follow us on Instagram or join our Facebook group (Linguistik Graz) to stay up to date.
New StV members wanted!
A new student council will be elected in the summer semester of 2025. As all current members are expected to graduate next year, we are urgently looking for successors! The student council represents the interests of the students and therefore has an important say at the institute. As a StV member, for example, you can also become a member of the Curriculum Commission (Cuko) and help to create an attractive range of courses for students. The StV is also an important point of contact for advice, questions and problems relating to your studies and organizes cool events.
If you would like to play an active role in shaping our studies and would like to get a taste of the StV's activities, please get in touch with us.
Worth knowing
Tips for studying
To make your start in student life (and subsequently your everyday life as a student) easier, we, the student representatives for linguistics, have summarized the most important tips for studying here. The StV is also the right point of contact for all questions and problems relating to (and before) your studies. The best way to reach us is by email(sprachwissenschaft(at)oehunigraz.at) or on Instagram (@stv_sprachwissenschaft_unigraz).

If you would like to get involved with linguistics beyond your studies and are perhaps even interested in an academic career, we recommend attending a student conference, for example. One example of this is the StuTS (Studentische Tagung Sprachwissenschaft). You can find more detailed information here. (Hyperlink to the StuTS page under "Students")
-
It is possible to receive financial support from the StV, for example for travel expenses and participation fees at scientific conferences, the completion of theses or the organization of socializing events at the institute.
-
You do not have to stick exactly to the recommended study plan in the curriculum and on UGO. As we are a small institute, some courses are not offered regularly. It is therefore best to always check the course offerings for the entire academic year so that you don't miss anything.
-
Supplementary examination in Latin: If you did not take Latin at school, you must provide proof of having done so by the time you register for the Bachelor's seminar at the latest. You can simply attend the free one-year Latin course at the university. Please note: You can only register for the exam if you were registered for both lectures with exercises ("Latin language lessons for beginners 1 & 2").

Every year, the Faculty of Humanities awards merit scholarships for outstanding achievements within an academic year (October 1 to September 30)

Student conference on linguistics
The Studentische Tagung Sprachwissenschaft (StuTS) is an international conference organized by students for students. It takes place at a different (usually German-speaking) university every semester, and the StuTS even came to Graz in 1991 and 2024. The aim of StuTS is to bring together students from all linguistic disciplines and enable them to exchange ideas with each other.
In the winter semester 2024/25, the StuTS will take place in Marburg (20.11. to 24.11.) and in the summer semester 2025 in Leipzig. If you would like to take part, please contact the StV. To make sure you don't miss any information about the upcoming StuTSs, follow the official StuTS Instagram account (@stuts_official).
Review of the 75th StuTS in Graz
The International Student Conference on Linguistics (StuTS) is organized every semester by students from a - mostly German-speaking - university. From May 9-11, the conference took place in Graz for the second time since 1991. Around 160 students from Europe and all over the world came together for the StuTS in Graz. The approximately 80 presentations were framed by a picnic in the park, guided tours of the city and plenty of opportunities for exchange between students from a wide range of linguistics courses.
In addition to the supporting program, the keynote speeches by female academics from the University of Graz were a highlight. Veronika Mattes, Dina El Zarka, Jennifer Brunner, Gianina Iordăchioaia and Julia Gspandl presented their current research in the fields of psycholinguistics, phonology, sociolinguistics, grammar and typology to the conference participants.
A special feature of the StuTS in Graz was that students from the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Translation Studies interpreted the presentations in one of the lecture rooms. This emphasized the linguistic diversity at the Wall University Center.
The organizing team - Anna-Lena Feichter, Lea-Sophie Kravanja, Lucia Neuhold, Nina Richter - would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the conference possible!
