Department

These webpages are for the Department of Linguistics, which is part of the Faculty Humanities  of the University of Graz.

Linguistics involves all aspects of human language, e.g. the structure (grammar) of individual languages and their similarities and differences (universals, typology, comparative linguistics). Linguistic research also focuses on language contact and language mixing, the history of linguistics, language variation (sociolinguistics, multilingualism, dialects, discourse analysis, etc.) as well as language development in children and other forms of language acquisition (literacy acquisition, second language acquisition). Furthermore, linguistics addresses speech disorders (speech loss, speech disorders).

Since language is the most important human medium of interaction, linguistics is considered an interdisciplinary fundamental research area for several other fields of research and application (phonetics, clinical linguistics, speech therapy, telematics, language didactics, minority politics, forensics, archaeology, ethnology, anthropology and all individual language studies).

The Department of Linguistics Graz was founded in 1972 and focuses on the subject areas of phonetics/phonology, grammar theory and typology, language description, sociolinguistics and language development research. Structure courses on languages that are not commonly taught in school are offered regularly (most recently Arabic, especially Moroccan Arabic, Basque, Bikol, Burmese, Huastec, Pame, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Yucatec Mayan etc.).
